About Kunsthal Charlottenborg

Kunsthal Charlottenborg is Copenhagen's largest exhibition venue and meeting-place for contemporary art. The gallery produces or co-produces 4-5 exhibitions per year, including the annual Spring Exhibition, which is held in collaboration with the Charlottenborg Foundation. The exhibitions are internationally oriented, and are promoted widely among art enthusiasts of all ages.

In addition to 1,400 m2 of exhibition space, the gallery also features a "possibilities room", the Mezzanine, which provides a platform for activities that go beyond the capacity of the exhibition space. Here, the diverse language of contemporary art can come to expression via performances, artist talks, debates and other exchanges. Anyone who works with art in one way or other can book the Mezzanine free of charge directly at our website, and thereby host activities and events which focus on contemporary art. The gallery also has a café, Café Kunsthal Charlottenborg, which provides service on the sunny side of the courtyard and in the entrance hall.

The gallery is housed in a historic building, designed by the architects Albert Jensen and Ferdinand Meldahl, and built in 1883. The building, which is shared with Danmarks Kunstbibliotek (the Danish National Art Library) was originally called the Exhibition Building at Charlottenborg, to emphasise its affiliation with Charlottenborg itself, the baroque palace on Kongens Nytorv which now houses the pictorial art schools of the Royal Danish Academy of Art.

Kunsthal Charlottenborg is a state institution, and is part of the Ministry of Culture.
